Improvements in Brakes for Cycles and like Vehicles

Abstract

22,659. Gannon, S. J. Oct. 20. Brakes.-Relates to brakes for cycles and like vehicles, particularly those operated from the handle-bar grips by a flexible mandril of the kind described in Specification No. 18,722, A.D. 1902. If a front-wheel brake only is used, the brake-pad holders a, Fig. 1, are operated, through rods k pivoted to ears m and thence connected by an adjustable tube p to the mandril chain q. The brake pads are released from the wheel by a spring g, attached by a screw h, as shown in Fig. 12, to a curved plunger c which is attached by a swivel hinge b to the brake-pad holders a, and moves in a curved guide d. A rear-wheel brake, Fig. 2, of the same type, may be connected to a separate mandril through an adjustable connection v, attached to a cord w which passes over rollers x in a flattened tube y, and then through a similar tube fastened to the bottom of the head. Clips t and A are used for attaching the rod v and the tube y to the frame. The rearwheel brake may be placed near the top of the wheel. To operate both brakes simultaneously the cord w connected to the rear brake is passed over a pulley N on the rod p, Fig. 1, and attached to a cap L connected to the rods k. The ears m may consist of two plates united by screws which are prevented from binding the rods k by ferrules or shoulders ; the plates are fastened to the part p either by nuts above and below the ears, or by a screwed socket furnished with a flange in place of the lower nut.
